The Democratic Alliance and the Independent Democrats have ousted the African National Congress from control of the Bergrivier municipality in the Western Cape.
The two parties on Monday afternoon won a vote of no confidence in the ANC mayor, deputy mayor and speaker. The meeting in the council’s Piketberg chamber came after the DA obtained a High Court interdict ordering the speaker to convene the council so the vote could take place.
DA Western Cape leader Theuns Botha said the ID had taken the mayor’s post, while the DA had filled the deputy and speaker’s positions.
”We’re quite pleased [at the result],” he said. ”We’ve struggled since October last year to take over this council. The ANC made it impossible for us. They ignored every rule in the book.”
He said he was concerned at the delay. The fact that the ANC resisted so strongly was an indication that there might be something seriously wrong in the administration.
The DA and ID would have a ”close look” at that. – Sapa
