Tests conducted to determine Shaik’s condition

The Department of Correctional Services is conducting medical tests on fraud convict Schabir Shaik to determine whether he should remain in hospital or go back to jail.

”Specialists are in the process of conducting a medical examination to assess his condition in order to arrive at a second opinion,” Correctional services spokesperson Luphumzo Kebeni said on Monday.

Shaik has been in Durban’s St Augsutine’s hospital for the past 81 days. He is being treated for high blood pressure.

The medical tests follow recent media reports questioning Shaik’s stay in hospital.

Meanwhile, medical scheme Discovery Health is also investigating claims made by Shaik for his stay in the hospital.

”It is being investigated and if the claims are clinically appropriate then we will pay in terms of the rules of the scheme.

”If claims are found to be clinically inappropriate then we won’t pay. Some claims have been discharged,” Discovery marketing officer Hylton Kallner said.

The scheme blocked further payment until it has completed its investigation into the authenticity of Shaik’s condition, the report said. — Sapa
