Zimbabwe union leaders arrested

Zimbabwean police arrested two union leaders in the capital Harare for inciting teachers to go on strike, a police spokesperson said on Thursday.

”We have arrested Raymond Majongwe, the president of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, for addressing teachers at a school in Mabelreign,” police assistant commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena told Agence France-Presse.

”He [Majongwe] was picked up together with somebody else. The two are still in police custody.”

Bvudzijena did not give the identity of the second person arrested on Wednesday night but confirmed that he was a senior figure in the same union.

On Monday last week, teachers across the Southern African country began an indefinite industrial action to press for better salaries and working conditions.

They are demanding a monthly salary hike of Z$540 000 ($2 160) up from Z$84 000.

Meanwhile, 10 students who were arrested on Tuesday for participating in an illegal demonstration were still in police custody.

One of those arrested was on a police wanted list for skipping bail, Bvudzijena said. – Sapa-AFP
