Twins perish in Durban blaze

A twin boy and girl burnt to death in a blaze that gutted their home in Sea View, Durban, on Monday afternoon, emergency services said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the seven-year-old siblings had tried to escape, but could not because of burglar bars. Paramedics declared them dead on scene.

The divisional commander of eThekwini Fire, Alfred Newman, said the house was destroyed. ”The cause of the fire is not known, but one can see that it started at the kitchen.”

He said investigators were on their way to the scene. An electrical fault was ruled out as there had been a power failure in the area at the time of the fire.

Local residents were speculating that the children had made a fire to cook their lunch. — Sapa
