Aviation authority probes fatal helicopter crash

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is investigating the cause of a helicopter crash that killed a pilot and his trainee in northern Johannesburg on Thursday morning.

Spokesperson Phindiwe Gwebu said CAA investigators were at the scene of the crash, trying to piece together information.

”The cause of the crash could be human factors or mechanical problems, but we can’t speculate at this time,” Gwebu said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the helicopter hit trees on a property and crashed into the garden of the house next door.

Netcare 911’s Trevor Putterill said the two occupants died on the scene in East Hertford Road.

Nobody in the house was hurt and the house was undamaged.

The helicopter belonged to an aviation school at Grand Central Airport in Midrand, said Johannesburg emergency services’ Steven Kirk.

Police could not immediately release details of the two men. — Sapa
