Ajax drop on log after loss to Stars

Playing in front of an empty stadium, the standard of soccer was poor in a Premier Soccer League match between Ajax Cape Town and Silver Stars at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday.

Ajax dropped to fourth place on the log after they were beaten 2-1 by Silver Stars.

Terror Fanteni turned quickly on the ball in the second minute, but his shot went over the bar.

The visitors took the lead in the third when Dingane Masanabo’s powerful shot from the edge of the box flew into the top left-hand corner.

The visitors doubled the score two minutes after the interval when an Ajax defender and Hans Vonk stood mesmerised as Masanabo tapped the ball into the net.

Eight minutes later, Ajax pulled one back when Franklin Cale centred and Granwald Scott easily scored.

There were several bookings on both sides, four by Ajax and three for Stars, and in the 68th minute Clayton Jagers was sent off after receiving his second booking.

Masanabo almost scored a hat-trick as his shot in the 80th minute struck the upright. — Sapa
