Sundowns champions after Ajax, Pirates draw

Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned South African champions on Sunday without kicking a ball after Orlando Pirates were held to a goalless draw at home by Ajax Cape Town.

Pirates still had an outside mathematical chance of catching the defending champions but needed to win all their remaining five matches and hope Sundowns lost their last five.

The draw left Sundowns with an unassailable lead on 56 points, 12 more than second-placed Moroka Swallows, who have just three matches left.

Sundowns did not play at the weekend having been eliminated from the African Champions League by defending champions Al-Ahly of Egypt in Cairo on Friday. — Reuters
