A fire that destroyed hundreds of hectares of forest in and around the Tsitsikamma National Park in the Eastern Cape has finally been brought under control, South African National Parks (SANParks) said on Tuesday.
SANParks spokesperson Carel van der Merwe said he was not sure about the extent of the damage caused by the raging fire.
”I cannot say how much damage the fire caused on property as some of the areas affected were private property. All I can say is that there are currently close to 200 workers working flat-out to put out the fire. It is currently under control,” he said.
The fire, which spread out of control following a controlled burn, has also destroyed alien plants around the affected areas.
”A strong wind blew it into the Tsitsikamma National Park where it burned through fynbos and then into a plantation where it has already destroyed 200ha of forest,” he said.
