Train amputates commuter’s leg

A 38-year-old man’s leg was amputated when he fell under a train at the Roodepoort railway station on Tuesday night, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe said the man was standing close to the doors of the train when it pulled into the station at 6.20pm, en route to Johannesburg.

”It is not clear exactly when the doors opened, but as other commuters jostled for position to get as close as possible to the exit doors, the victim was bumped hard enough to cause him to fall out of the train’s doorway,” he said.

The man’s right arm and left leg were fractured and his head and face were also injured. His right leg was amputated between the knee and ankle.

Stokoe said the severed portion of the man’s leg was recovered and taken to hospital with him. His condition was described as critical, but stable. — Sapa
