Cold snap not quite over

”Very cold” conditions were expected to persist over some parts of the country, the South African Weather Service warned on Thursday.

The Eastern Cape, eastern Free State, Lesotho, western KwaZulu-Natal and Highveld areas of Gauteng and Mpumalanga would be affected, according to the service’s website.

Strong to gale-force south-westerly winds were also anticipated along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

A forecaster at the service said the cold front had left the country and that no further snowfalls were predicted.

”Otherwise it’s fine over most of the country. From today it will start getting warmer.”

Another cold front was expected to hit Cape Town on Saturday.

”It’s not as strong as this one and we’re still monitoring it to see if it will bring snow.”

Airports Company South Africa spokesperson Solomon Makgale said flights were on schedule. On Wednesday morning flights departing from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg were delayed for up to three hours due to ice covering the aircraft.

Johannesburg’s maximum temperature was expected to reach 12 degrees on Thursday and 15 on Friday. — Sapa
