Six killed at initiation ceremonies

Six people were stabbed to death during initiation ceremonies over the weekend, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the initiates were stabbed by people while attending three different ceremonies.

Five people were arrested in connection with the incidents.

”They may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time,” Manatha said.

”Those attending these ceremonies normally intoxicate themselves with traditional beer and brandy. They might not have been in their right minds.”

Four initiates were killed at Dutywa, and the other two at Willowvale and Ngqamakhwe.

”The initiates were all in their late 20s and died at the ceremonies.”

Investigations were continuing, said Manatha. — Sapa
