A motorist was slightly injured when her car was stoned, then overturned by a rioting mob just off the R511, in Diepsloot, on Sunday night, said Netcare 911.
She was taken to hospital with a laceration to her head, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe.
Pretoria police used rubber bullets to disperse an unruly mob beating a man they accused of rape and robbery in Diepsloot early on Sunday night, said Captain Lucas Sithole.
They rescued the man and took him to a Pretoria hospital, where he was in a serious condition, he said. No-one had yet laid any charges against him.
As the night wore on, the 500-strong crowd dwindled to between 100 and 200 people, who then ran riot on the R511, stoning police officers and passing motorists.
Another motorist was pelted with rocks while driving home to Johannesburg from Pretoria in his Alfa Romeo, said Stokoe.
”He was unable to get away and his car came to a halt partly off the road. He also sustained a laceration to the head, but said he was okay and would make his own way to hospital once he had arranged for his car to be towed away.”
Stokoe said police officers had to escort the medical crew to the injured motorists along a road blockaded with burning tyres.
Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the R511 was closed to traffic between the R28 and Mnandi Street early on Sunday night.
The situation had ”calmed down” by 9.15pm when it was reopened, said Minnaar. – Sapa
