Coal miners’ three-day strike suspended

Production at coal mines countrywide will resume at midnight on Wednesday following a three-day strike by mine workers, trade union Solidarity said.

”We suspended the strike. Our workers are going back to work tonight [Wednesday] at 12am,” said spokesperson Reint Dykema.

About 3 500 Solidarity members started striking at coal mines around the country on Monday over an inadequate pay offer, particularly for artisans.

Dykema said a ”small change” had been made with regards to the workers’ salaries.

However, Chamber of Mines spokesperson Jabu Maphalala said ”no new wage offers were made”, but confirmed that the strike had been suspended.

He said the parties had agreed to establish a coal-industry task team to look into the supply and retention of scarce technical skills and to address the shortages of these skills.

”But this is not new. It was part of the offer made on August 3,” he said. — Sapa
