Scorpions still investigating Durban university

The Scorpions are investigating the Durban University of Technology (DUT), but the National Prosecuting Authority on Friday would not release any details about the investigation.

NPA deputy spokesperson Tlali Tlali confirmed that an investigation had been under way at the institution for some time and that ”we are making significant progress”.

However, he could not say when he expected the investigation to be completed or provide any other details.

Professor Jonathan Jansen, who early last year was appointed administrator of the troubled institution, first mentioned the Scorpions investigation last November when he announced the completion of a 394-page forensic audit report into the DUT’s affairs.

At the time he said: ”There is, however, one ongoing and very serious investigation that involves the Scorpions and about which I cannot divulge information at the moment. I have asked KPMG to assist the Scorpions to fast-track this investigation so that by the end of 2006 we can hopefully conclude this matter as well.”

On Thursday, he said the investigation was complex. ”It has been very difficult to get supporting documentation. It was a great frustration for me.”

During his November briefing about the forensic audit report, Jansen also said he had recommended that the DUT bring disciplinary proceedings and criminal proceedings against staff where possible. He also recommended that the DUT try to recover any money that had disappeared through theft or fraud.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on December 7 that six staff members had been suspended following an investigation into the disappearance of R50-million.

However, comment could not be obtained on from the DUT management on whether any disciplinary or legal action had been taken. Comment could also not be obtained on whether any attempts had been made to recover any money. — Sapa
