Skwatsha cleared on land deal

The Western Cape legislature’s public accounts committee has cleared African National Congress (ANC) provincial secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha of wrongdoing in a lucrative Cape Town land deal, the ANC said on Friday.

Allegations that Skwatsha had interfered in the sale of a province-owned 2,4ha erf in Tamboerskloof were referred to the committee by the Democratic Alliance.

It was alleged he used his former position as a provincial minister of public works to steer the land to the Rowmoor consortium, made up of business people close to the ANC.

However, the committee found he had no case to answer.

Skwatsha said on Friday he was pleased the committee had ”unanimously exonerated me”.

”I am convinced that the accusations levelled against me were politically motivated,” he said.

The surfacing of the allegations coincided with infighting between a Skwatsha-aligned faction in the ANC in the province, and one led by Premier Ebrahim Rasool.

Despite Skwatsha’s exoneration, the committee is still pushing ahead with its investigation of other aspects of the deal. — Sapa
