Container truck ploughs into cars in Jo’burg

A container truck ploughed into six vehicles at a traffic light in Louis Botha Avenue, Johannesburg, on Monday, leaving 18 people hurt, said ER24.

Spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the 20 tonne truck was heading in the direction of Houghton Drive when it hit a queue of cars waiting for the traffic light to change shortly before 7pm.

Among the vehicles were a Hi-Ace taxi carrying ten passengers and a police bakkie from the Hillbrow police station.

He said 18 people were treated on the scene, but only four were taken to hospital, including the driver of a red Nissan Sentra, a police officer and man who complained of chest pains.

Vermaak said the area had been closed to traffic. – Sapa
