Former Tshwane mayor in head-on collision

Former Tshwane mayor Smangaliso Mkhatshwa was admitted to hospital on Monday after the vehicle in which he was travelling collided head-on with a Toyota Tazz in Pretoria, Tshwane metro police said.

Spokesperson William Baloyi said the accident occurred at about 9am at the corner of Pretorius and Church streets.

”Early indications show that the driver of the Toyota Tazz had an epileptic fit and rammed on the accelerator. The Tazz then collided head-on with the BMW in which Mkhatshwa was being driven,” Baloyi said.

He said the extent of Mkhatshwa’s injuries was not known.

Mkhatshwa’s driver was saved by the vehicle’s airbag and the former mayor was taken to Muelmed Hospital.

Hospital spokesperson Johann Dednam confirmed that Mkhatshwa was admitted to the emergency room this morning. ”I spoke to him and his left arm is broken, but otherwise he’s doing fine,” Dednam said. — Sapa
