One dies in parcel-bomb blast in Paris

A parcel-bomb explosion in central Paris killed a legal secretary and injured five others on Thursday, investigators said.

The blast went off on the fourth floor of a building housing lawyers’ offices in the capital’s fashionable eighth arrondissement, or district, staff said.

The building on Boulevard Malesherbes is where President Nicolas Sarkozy once practised as a lawyer, though there was no immediate evidence of a link.

Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie left Brussels, where she was to attend an European Union meeting, in order to visit the scene. In a statement, she said she ”condemns with the greatest severity this cowardly and hateful act”. — Sapa-AFP
