Women remain massively under-represented in leadership positions in higher education.
In 2007 only three (and one acting) of South Africa’s 23 vice chancellors were women. In addition, among top managers only 21% of the deputy vice-chancellors and 28% of the deans are women.
Stimulated by HERS-SA, a non-profit organisation, representatives of the Council on Higher Education (CHE), the department of education, and Higher Education South Africa (HESA) will host a conference to focus decision-makers’ attention on the critical shortage of women leaders in higher education.
The conference: Institutional Cultures and Higher Education Leadership: Where are the Women? will take place at the University of Cape Town on March 27 and 28.
