South African Anderson reaches Las Vegas ATP final

South African Kevin Anderson reached the final of the ATP hard-court tournament in Las Vegas on Saturday with a straight-sets victory over American Robby Ginepri.

Anderson, ranked 175th in the world, defeated Ginepri 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 to advance and will next take on another American Sam Querrey.

Querrey surprised fourth seed Guillermo Canas 7-5, 6-2 in the night match on Saturday.

Anderson (21) has been the revelation of the week. He had lost the only previous two ATP matches he had played, and earned his way into the draw through qualifying.

In the first round he toppled sixth-seeded Michael Llodra of France.

He went on to beat US wild card John Isner, Russian Evgeny Korolev and Ginepri — the former world number 15 now ranked 111th — en route to his first ATP final.

Querrey, advances to his first final of the year and continued the string of upsets in this tournament as he knocked out the last seeded player in the field.

Top seed Fernando Gonzalez, number two Lleyton Hewitt — the defending champion — and the third-seeded Marcos Baghdatis all were ousted in a rash of second-round upsets earlier in the week. — AFP
