Mti’s drunken-driving case postponed

The drunken-driving case against 2010 Soccer World Cup chief security officer Linda Mti was postponed in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday until next month.

State prosecutor Mabuse Monareng requested the postponement because the state witness was writing exams.

Mti’s lawyer told the court the delay was unreasonable since his client was first arrested for reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol in November 2006.

The magistrate ordered a final postponement until June 12 and ordered the state to provide the defence within the next five days with information it had already requested in January.

Mti was arrested after an accident in Sandringham, Johannesburg. The driver of the other vehicle involved alleged that Mti could not stand up straight and that his speech was slurred.

At the time, Mti was the South African chief of prisons. During his term of office, he was investigated over a possible conflict of interest when contracts for prison maintenance were awarded to companies with which he was allegedly associated.
