Three ATMs blown up in Gauteng

In a series of three ATM bombings in less than half a day in Gauteng, gangs of robbers on Friday morning made off with undisclosed sums of cash.

In Strijdompark in Randburg, a Standard Bank ATM was blown up at the Motor City Centre, Gauteng police said.

Spokesperson Inspector Hein van Heerden said: ”A security guard noticed three men standing in front of the ATM. A few minutes later, the men walked away and the ATM exploded. The same group of men then returned and went inside the ATM cubical and took an undisclosed amount of money from the damaged ATM.

Surrounding buildings were slightly damaged but no injuries were reported.

In Atteridgeville, an ATM was bombed in the early hours of Friday, Pretoria police said.

Spokesperson Constable Patricia Simelane said security guards saw three cars drop off a number of men at a First National Bank ATM outside an Engen garage just before 2.30am. The men were all armed. The guards then heard a loud bang and they saw the suspects carrying boxes away.

The three cars that dropped the men — a red Polo, white BMW and blue Corolla — then returned to fetch the men. The guards said the incident happened too fast for them to react.

In the third incident, an ATM was bombed in Orange Farm, also in the early hours of Friday morning, Gauteng police reported. Captain Johannes Motsiri said the bombing occurred at Extension 3 at about 2am.

No arrests have been made in any of these cases. — Sapa
