Suspected robber killed in Killarney

A suspected robber in his early twenties was shot and killed in Killarney, Johannesburg police said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said the man and an accomplice gained entry into a townhouse through a bathroom window at about 3am on Saturday.

”The owner of the house heard his mother screaming, took his licensed pistol and rushed to her bedroom. On arrival he saw two men who tried to escape through a window and fired several shots at them.”

Mavundla said one man was found dead at the scene with two gunshot wounds.

The other suspected burglar fled and was still at large, he said.

An inquest and house robbery dockets were opened.

A total of 300 people were arrested in Johannesburg’s city centre and surrounding areas for various crimes over the weekend.

Mavundla said the 300 were arrested for drug dealing and possession, and other minor crimes.

They would appear in the Johannesburg and Hillbrow Magistrate’s Courts on Monday. – Sapa
