ANC meeting turns violent, three shot

Three men were shot when an African National Congress meeting in Lusikisiki turned violent, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Three men were shot when an African National Congress (ANC) meeting in Lusikisiki turned violent, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Inspector Mlungisi Matidane said members threw stones at each other at the party’s meeting at the Lusikisiki Training College at 10am on Sunday.

”While they were throwing stones at each other, gunshots were heard,” said Matidane.

A 40-year-old man was shot in the head, and two others were shot and wounded in the legs.

”The 40-year-old was taken to hospital in a critical condition, while the other two were treated and discharged,” said Matidane.

He said the meeting was postponed to Wednesday and would be monitored by the police.

Police were investigating a case of attempted murder, public violence and intimidation. No arrests have been made as yet. — Sapa
