Reitz video case postponed

The case against four former University of the Free State (UFS) students, who made a video which landed the university in a racial storm earlier this year, was postponed to next month.

RC Malherbe, Johnny Roberts, Schalk van der Merwe and Danie Grobler, former residents of the Reitz men’s residence — which has since been closed — face charges of crimen injuria.

The case was postponed because an advocate, appearing on behalf of the four men, could not be in court on Friday.

The matter was postponed to November 14 when a trial date would be finalised. The four men were not in court.

Malherbe, Roberts and Van der Merwe were released on a warning during a previous court appearance.

The case against fourth accused, Danie Grobler, from Namibia, will be joined with theirs.

The video, of a mock initiation of five black staff members into hostel activities, sparked a local and international outcry.

It featured black university employees on their knees eating food supposedly urinated on by a white student.

In the video, the students referred to the university’s integration policy for campus residences. The four women and one male worker shown in the video are also expected to testify.

The UFS closed Reitz as a result of the video, saying the building would be changed into an ”institute for diversity”. – Sapa
