Metro cops arrest one of their own

A Johannesburg metro cop was arrested after apparently being caught red-handed taking a bribe from a motorist, metro police said on Saturday.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said members of the JMPD’s internal affairs unit were driving on the M1 North on Friday near the Glenhove offramp, when they saw a driver of a blue Datsun sitting
inside a metro cop’s vehicle.

”When they stopped, the driver of the Datsun jumped up and the cop drove off. He returned when instructed to do so by the sergeant on duty.”

The metro police office had apparently taken a R50 bribe to squash a fine he was about to issue.

He will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on bribery and corruption charges.

”Corrupt metro officers must be aware that they are going to get caught this festive season. We are not going to tolerate corrupt officers this festive season,” said Minnaar. – Sapa
