Charges withdrawn in Callie case

Culpable homicide charges against the driver involved in a car crash in which Isidingo actress Ashley Callie was killed were withdrawn by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Nico Pretorius (21) was charged with culpable homicide and reckless driving following the death of Callie after she sustained head injuries during the crash in northern Johannesburg on February 8 last year.

Defence attorney Ronald Lotz told the South African Press Association that the state withdrew the charges because it could not prove its case against his client.

”We should not have been in court at all because he [Pretorius] was not guilty.”

The Callie family is challenging the court decision.

”We have made representations to the National Prosecuting Authority and we are satisfied that the case is being considered,” said the actress’s sister, Lauren Callie.

”We are extremely disappointed about the charges being dropped, considering the Randburg Magistrate’s Court said we had a good case.” — Sapa
