Uganda president sacks finance minister

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni fired his finance minister and moved his energy minister in a Cabinet reshuffle that brought onboard his wife and kept key loyalists.

Museveni replaced Finance Minister Ezra Suruma with Sydda Bbumba and appointed his wife, Janet, as a minister for the remote Karamoja region.

Uganda’s economy has seen steady growth since Museveni took power more than 20 years ago and the recent discovery of oil in the western region has boosted investor interest in the country.

Oil exploration companies say they have found large quantities of crude in Lake Albert.

The former guerrilla leader also moved Energy Minister Daudi Migereko to government chief whip, placing Hillary Onek in charge of the energy portfolio. — Reuters
