Bucs fined R200 000 after pitch invasion

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee meted out a R200 000 suspended fine on Orlando Pirates as a result of the pitch invasion of their supporters at Ellis Park following the recent victory over Premier League champions and log leaders SuperSport United.

But while many viewed the over-zealous celebration as damaging to South African soccer’s reputation and ability to organise and control the forthcoming eight-nation Confederations Cup in June, the Disciplinary Committee seemingly took into account the fact that there was no malice involved in the spontaneous celebration while deciding to suspend the entire fine for 12 months.

PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu, however, revealed that the Buccaneers would have to pay the R21 000 cost of the disciplinary hearing and also apologise publicly over six radio stations for the rollicking behaviour of their fans.

The PSL, apparently, consider that no aplogy is necessary to TV viewers and others who are not dedicated radio listeners — which seems more than a bit curious in view of the fact that what resembled a wild west cattle stampede in the movies being visible to those watching the game on television. — Sapa
