A woman died instantly when her car veered off the N2 highway near Empangeni and hit an embankment on Saturday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.
Mounties Ambulance Service spokesperson Joseph Kruger said two other people sustained critical injuries and a fourth person sustained bruises.
All the patients were taken to the Ngwelezane hospital for treatment. The cause of the accident was not immediately apparent.
The accident comes after the Department of Transport earlier released statistics that showed there had been 48 fatalities from road accidents since the beginning of the Easter weekend.
Spokesperson Collen Msibi said 13 drivers, 19 passengers and 16 pedestrians had died since Thursday.
The main contributing factors in the accidents were ”human factors” including excessive speeding, jay-walking and unlawful and unsafe overtaking, Msibi said. Poor visibility and sharp bends were also blamed for the accidents. – Sapa
