Health Department could sack striking doctors

The Gauteng Health Department is considering dismissing doctors who continued striking on Monday.

Provincial health department spokesperson JP Louw said, ”Those [who have carried on striking] are under serious consideration [for dismissal].”

He said on Monday doctors at all hospitals, except Pretoria’s Dr George Mukhari Hospital and Jubilee hospital, had gone back to work.

A total of 336 doctors from Mukhari hospital and 24 from Jubilee were under consideration for dismissal, said Louw.

He said a decision would be taken either later on Monday or on Tuesday about whether these doctors would be fired.

At the moment, the department was ensuring that whatever steps were taken were done under the correct legal protocol.

On Friday the Labour Court in Johannesburg granted an interdict against the Gauteng striking doctors.

The department said at the time that the strike — which began earlier this month — was unprotected and unlawful.

The strike began over doctors’ grievances over pay and working conditions. — Sapa
