Buthelezi’s grandson kidnapped, drug lords held

The grandson of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi was abducted last week and the drug lords holding him had demanded a ransom, the leader said in his online letter on Thursday.

But a call to the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner quickly led to the arrest of the suspects.

”The seriousness of organised crime was personally brought home to me again last week when my grandson was abducted in Durban by drug lords,” Buthelezi said.

”My grandson, a recovering addict, was being assisted by a pastor and close family friend, who is experienced in this field.

”He rang me to tell me that the drug lords were demanding R1 000 for my grandson’s release.”

The province’s police commissioner Hamilton Ngidi was contacted and the kidnappers were later caught and arrested.

Buthelezi did not say whether his grandson was injured or how many suspects had been arrested. — Sapa
