Miner dies after accident at Elandsrand mine

A mine worker has died from injuries after an accident at Harmony Gold’s Elandsrand mine near Carletonville, the company said on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Friday morning during scraper cleaning operations in a stoping workplace, Harmony said in a statement.

”Management, together with the Department of Mineral Resources, commenced investigations yesterday [Tuesday],” the statement said.

”The loss of life is tragic and we express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family,” said Harmony’s CEO, Graham Briggs.

”During the past financial year, safety at Elandsrand received priority attention and commendable improvements in safety were recorded as a resulted of the effective behaviour-based safety initiatives that were implemented at the mine,” Briggs said.

He said it was sad that despite these measures, the death had occurred. — Sapa
