US backs Guinea arms embargo

The United States on Tuesday said it ”strongly supports” a West African arms embargo against Guinea, where dozens of opposition supporters have been killed in political violence.

The White House said it backed moves by members of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) to sanction Guinea following brutal violence that killed more than 100 people in September.

The United Nations estimates that about 150 people were killed in a Conakry stadium on September 28 when troops opened fire on a rally urging a junta leader not to stand in elections planned for January.

”The United States strongly supports the Ecowas decision to impose an arms embargo on Guinea and to work with the African Union to develop a regime of targeted sanctions against individuals,” the White House statement said.
