Awarding-winning South African sculptor Jackson Hlongwane has died at the age of 99, SABC Radio News reported on Monday.
The national broadcaster reported that Hlongwane died over the weekend at his home in Limpopo after a short illness.
Hlongwane’s work often dealt with issues around tradition, religion and beliefs systems and was included in a number of prestigious art collections.
His work is studied as part of the national school curriculum.
In 2005, the Department of Arts and Culture named him a “living treasure”.
A visit to his home was recommended on tourist websites whereby “you should set aside a few hours to chat to this eccentric character who makes sense of messages and shapes in twisted roots”. – Sapa
