Kenya leaders move to defuse political tension

An adviser to Kenya’s prime minister says the president and prime minister will meet on Sunday to chart a way forward out of the country’s political deadlock.

Salim Lone says President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga spoke on the phone late on Wednesday and had a cordial and useful conversation.

Tension between the two has risen since a dispute last weekend spiralled into a war of words over which leader holds which powers.

The dispute has sparked fears that a falling out could lead the country back into the post-election violence that killed more than 1 000 people in early 2008.

The United States and former United Nations chief Kofi Annan have urged the two Kenyans to meet and work out their differences. — Sapa-AP
