The corruption trial of former police national commissioner Jackie Selebi resumed in the South Gauteng High Court on Monday morning.
After three months of delays, former intelligence coordinator Barry Gilder has taken the stand to testify in camera about the existence of a draft report which allegedly states that Selebi received money from former mining magnate Brett Kebble and his family.
The testimony comes after numerous attempts by State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele to prevent it, ending in the Constitutional Court in February.
Judge Meyer Joffe asked the media and public to leave the court for Gilder’s testimony, following which he will decide whether or not to make the record available to the media, on condition that no sensitive information arises that may compromise state security.
Selebi’s defence counsel, Jaap Cilliers, said: “We would prefer the witness to testify in open court — but we don’t want to waste further time.”
Following Gilder’s testimony, the state may decide to call up a few further witnesses, but the end of its case is within sight.
