Jo’burg music picks: October 8 2010

There’s a wonderfully eclectic range of genres for music lovers to indulge in this week.

  • Imperial Tiger Orchestra will be performing at Bassline in Newtown, Johanessburg on Friday 8 October. Inspired by the Golden Age of Ethiopian modern music (1969-1978) the Orchestra’s repertoire consists of revamped remakes of songs from the golden age of Ethiopian music, traditionals standards and latest Addis productions: a powerful horn section, deadly percussions and relentless keyboards provide a merciless and efficient instrumental reinterpretation and improvisation based on original vocal songs. Preserving the natural beauty of melodies and Ethiopian sound while exploring uncharted territory, playing with textures and dynamics, adding distortions and noise to complete beautiful pieces, the self-proclaimed counterfeiters embrace dark hypnotic rhythms, obsessive basslines and grooves from electronic music.

  • Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 October sees the second installment of Rocking the Gardens at Emmarentia Dam/Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. A mirror event of the Rocking The Daisies music festival in the Cape, Rocking The Gardens has been expanded to cover two days this year and presents a fantastic line up for the weekend. This year the performers include Rambling Bones, Tidal Waves, Jesse Clegg, Prime Circle, Zebra and Giraffe, the Springbok Nude Girls and international acts New Young Pony Club and The Idan Raichel Project. Gates open at 10am both days, first act starts at 11am. Single day and weekend tickets are available from  www.webtickets.co.za
