Gauteng music picks: November 5 2010

International reggae act Easy Star All-Stars are on a short South African tour and will perform in Johannesburg on Thursday 11 November.

  • Thanks to their best-selling tribute album releases, Dub Side of the Moon (2003) and Radiodread (2006), as well as Until That Day (2008), an original EP, the Easy Star All-Stars have built a growing, dedicated fan base throughout the world, bringing together fans of reggae, classic rock, dub and indie rock into one big family. Their latest release, Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band, released in April 2009, tackles the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in complete reggae fashion. The Easy Star All Star’s have received the approval of Pink Floyd, Radiohead and others who have allowed them to spread the Reggae/Dub love, challenge audiences and expand the genre of reggae into all corners of the world.   • Blunted Stuntman and Kid Fonque, legends of the 206 breaks scene are bringing back the legendary Tuesday nights at the Bassline in Newtown. Besides treating you to all manner of bass music your two hosts have invited a few legends of their own to share the decks. On Tuesday 9 November Richard the Third and Twelv make basslines like animal growls, slow-breathing atmospheres, cut-up Rap samples and shatter-proof beats. With an assortment of toys they are pushing the envelope for local Dubstep. Their live show is the perfect balance of dance floor DJ uprocking and mad scientist music-machine performance.
