Son Of Gauteng Premier Dies

The Gauteng provincial government said on Wednesday the 23-year-old son of Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane died on Tuesday afternoon.

“The cause of death for Retlabusa Mokonyane is not known at this stage,” spokesperson Dumisani Zulu told the South African Press Association on Tuesday night.

“The family needs their space at this time,” he said.

Zulu said a statement would be issued in due course.

Colonel Neville Malila said police found Retlabusa’s body in a townhouse in Bassonia, south of Johannesburg.

“Preliminary police investigations at the scene has indicated that no foul play was suspected and an inquest docket was opened for investigation,” Malila said in a statement.

The Mail and Guardian learned in July that the premier’s son was involved in an explosion that burned down part of a house in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg.

In May last year the Star reported on another incident. Retlabusa was arrested in Kagiso for attempting to steal a Nissan bakkie but was released from the Krugersdorp police station after police could find no evidence implicating him. — Sapa
