Insure those expensive Christmas gifts

If you get an iPod or a PlayStation for Christmas, you’ll probably be celebrating in style. But while you’re enjoying your gift, remember to consider updating the home contents or portable possessions section of your short-term insurance policy.

“Whether it’s a gift from someone special or something you bought yourself with your much-deserved bonus, get it covered,” is the advice of Melody Redman, general manager of Budget Insurance Brokers.

Unfortunately, these items have a high risk of being stolen as they’re very marketable for criminals. The same goes for smartphones — you might want to make sure your new BlackBerry or Android is covered. Also consider covering jewellery, DVDs and other techno-gadgets. It won’t take much time, but it really is better to be safe with desirable, big-ticket items, especially if you’re travelling with them.
