Supporting Education

Professor Shaheed Hartley is the Director of the Science Learning Centre for Africa (SLCA) in the Faculty of Education.

He was a science and mathematics teacher on the Cape Flats for more than a decade before joining higher education in research development at Stellenbosch University.

He subsequently joined the former Cape Technikon where he served in the capacity of Director and later Acting Dean of Research before joining UWC.

Hartley was the 2009 national winner of the Science Communicator for Public Awareness award made by the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) for his work in science, mathematics and technology education over the last 5 years.

Hartley’s main research area is formal and informal educational interventions that serve to support the teaching and learning of science and mathematics education.

His current research includes the development of a needs base for science and mathematics educators, assessing the impact of structured professional development courses for science and mathematics educators, and challenges with numeracy at primary schools.
