Terror Accused Abandons Bail Application

Terror accused Brian Roach abandoned his bail application in the Alexandra Magistrate’s court on Friday.

The 63-year-old engineer admitted to the allegations put to him but indicated that he intended challenging that these amounted to terrorism.

Roach was arrested on Saturday in Hartbeespoort, in the North West, following allegations that he had sent threatening emails and letters to the United Kingdom.

In these letters he allegedly demanded $4-million in exchange for not releasing foot and mouth disease within the borders of the United Kingdom.

The state has included an additional charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

After Roach’s brief appearance, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson advocate Mthunzi Mhaga said the UK was not considering extradition at this stage as the trial was planned to be held in South Africa.

The case was postponed to February 22. — Sapa
