ANC’s ‘shoot the boer’ application postponed

Anc's 'shoot The Boer' Application Postponed

The application by the African National Congress (ANC) to intervene in the hate speech case brought by AfriForum against ANC Youth League (ANCYL) president Julius Malema was postponed until Thursday in the South Gauteng High Court.

Judge Colin Lamont postponed the hearing of the application in a ruling on Tuesday.

“There was another development in the case as a result of the ANC’s application,” said AfriForum spokesman Willie Spies.

“The Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa will also be joining the case.”

The case relates to Malema’s repeated use of the term “shoot the boer” in lyrics sung publicly last year.

A similar phrase was popularised by former ANCYL president Peter Mokaba at a memorial rally for slain anti-apartheid activist and South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani in Cape Town in 1993, months before South Africa held its first democratic elections in 1994.

In a separate case, Malema was found guilty of hate speech and harassment by the Equality Court in March last year over comments he made about a woman who accused President Jacob Zuma of rape.

He was to have apologised for the remark and paid R50 000 to the Sonke Gender Justice Network, but indicated he would appeal the finding. — Sapa
