Durban’s African Art Centre prides itself on nuturing and exposing young creative talent from KwaZulu-Natal and, having created an audience for over 1000 artists and crafters over the years, has also launched the thriving careers of many.
Another launching pad for new talent is in the form of the exhibition Abantu Bakithi / Our People which features the work of Lalelani Mbhele, Xolile Mazibuko, Sibusiso Duma and Mbhekeni Mbili and Welcome Danca. Mhele’s paintings capture her experiences as a young Zulu woman and follower of the Shembe faith and also comment upon the hardships of the rural community where she grew up. Duma and Danca are both students of the late, great Trevor Makhoba with Duma a virtuoso of vibrant colour while Danca, in his dark, haunted canvases, depicts the crpuscular world of hostel dwellers in KZN. Mbili is one of the provinces most distinctive voices has created a modernist take on ‘township art” to explore contemporary issues. His humorous, narrative paintings are sought after in both local and international markets.
African Art Centre, 94 Florida Road. The exhibition runs until March 13. Tel: 031 312 3804/5. Email [email protected]
