Jo’burg music picks: April 1 2011

When it comes to music in Jo’burg, it’s a case of everything at once.

Some weeks there is nothing and other weeks there is everything. For a start, that old crooner Neil Diamond is in town and plays at Soccer City on Saturday 2 April. I only mention it because when I was a kid my folks had a tape of the soundtrack from The Jazz Singer which at the time I thought was pretty sweet. Epic. Otherwise there is loads on: The Balkanology crew are back in town with The Good, The Bad and The Balkan on Friday April 1 at Carfax; Fulka, The Frown and The Black Hotels are launching new albums this week at The Woods (Friday April 1), Wolves (Monday April 4) and Katzy’s (Wednesday April 6) respectively, and the errant Felix Laband is sneaking out of the woodwork to play a set as DJ Snakehips at Kitchener’s on Saturday.

Also in town are Cape Town rockabilly kids Peachy Keen and The Bone Collectors who are bringing their The Circque du Psycho to The Bohenian (Friday) )and Woody’s(Saturday) and last but not least there is a massive show called The Joburg Experience taking place at Sky Raiders on Saturday 2 April which will feature the likes of Brooklyn Bouce (Bass, Beats and the Melody), Die Antwoord, Aking, Jax Panik, Van Coke Cartel, Die Heuwels Fantasties and about a hundred local DJ’s.
