Missing Splashy Fen fan found dead

A missing Splashy Fen festivalgoer has been found dead, police said on Friday.

Police diver Jack Haskins said the body of Craig Steynberg (23) was found in a river not far from the festival venue in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

“He was found dead further downstream in the afternoon from where the festival had been taking place,” said Haskins, of the police dog unit.

Steynberg’s father, Andre, and his uncle were present when the body was found. Steynberg was from Johannesburg.

A post-mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of death, but he was thought to have drowned.

The annual five-day Splashy Fen music festival is held on a farm in Underberg and draws thousands of fans from across the country.

Steynberg was sharing a tent with friends when he reportedly went missing on Saturday. Farmworkers in the area saw him walking around on Sunday.

The search for him started on Tuesday when his family and friends could not contact him. – Sapa
