The film places the controversial life of Afrikaans musician Johannes Kerkorrel under the spotlight.
Taking a very personal and objective look at his revolutionary approach to music and his life, Who Killed Johannes Kerkorrel? asks questions but also gives a wider range of answers than ever offered before. A lot of these questions are answered by people close to him that until now have not spoken about him on camera. They include his ex-wife, Anne Grobler, his son Reuben and his manager, Janneke Strijdonk.
The questions surrounding his alleged suicide, his HIV status, financial situation as well as his sexual preferences are also tackled by people in the know. His ongoing problems with fellow musicians and the media are also addressed. Kerkorrel’s body was found on November 12 2002 in a densely forested area near Kleinmond where he was hanging from a belt that had been tied to a tree.
The documentary, shot over a period of eighteen months in Europe and South Africa was directed and written by Deon Maas, a long time business associate and friend of Kerkorrel.
