Israel-born and Cape Town-raised singer-songwriter Yoav is this week’s must-see performer.
? Yoav was never just another busker trying to break through to the other side. Sure, he spent a long time living out of his suitcase and drifting between New York, London, Los Angeles, Montreal and Cape Town. But on his breakthrough big-label debut, Strange and Charmed (2008), he showed that he had picked up seriously alternative electro-accoustic chops along the way, channelling a mix of influences ranging from Rodriguez and the Pixies to Sugardrive. His latest album, A Foolproof Escape Plan, maps the dark side of love’s street. Fellow headliner Ard Matthews performs an unplugged set of Just Jinjer’s melodic rock.
The Assembly, 61 Harrington Street, East City, Cape Town. August 13 at 9pm. Entrance is R50.
? Does classical music have any currency outside academic institutions or conventional concert halls? New Evenings thinks so. This nonprofit concert series wants to prove that there is more life in classical music than the canonised ‘museum” music repertoire. On August 15 it showcases new 21st-century works performed by duo FourIVTwo in collaboration with electronic music maverick Markus Wormstorm. They will transport listeners to a tranquil realm with their ambient classical renditions of compositions by Daniel Levitan, Astor Piazzolla, Robert Fokkens and Hendrik Hofmeyr. Expect an ear-bending mix of noir narratives, humour, science fiction and political satire.
The Dream Factory, Orphan Street, Cape Town. Entrance is R50. Website: rel=”external”>www.newevenings.co.za.
