Jo’burg theatre picks: September 30 2011

If you have not been to the Market Theatre to watch Death of a Colonialist, a production written by Greg Latter, make your way because the play runs for only another two weeks.

When it had a run at the same theatre a few years ago, the Mail & Guardian wrote: “The Eastern Cape occupies a special place in the history of this country, indeed that of the subcontinent. Grahamstown comes alive in Death of a Colonialist, a drama about a family falling apart because of crime, disease and post-1994 racial dynamics.”

Also running at the same complex is the exquisite pyschosexual language drama, The Girl in the Yellow Dress. When the drama opened last year, the M&G wrote: “The strength of The Girl in the Yellow Dress lies in its intelligent and subtle use of language and dialogue. Just beneath the verbal sparring is a vast landscape in which concepts like race, truth and sex are endlessly examined. It is a fascinating production, showing the possibilities that abound when Europe and Africa are cleverly brought together.”

Death of a Colonialist runs until October 16 and The Girl in the Yellow Dress, which opened on September 27, runs until December 18. Market Theatre Complex, Miriam Makeba Street, Newtown. Book at Computicket. Website: www.markettheatre.co.za.
